Summer Vibes and Food for Families at Lawrence Mobile Market for Students

The market is open to all Lawrence Public School families and receives most of its food from GBFB.

With as many as 1 in 3 children in Massachusetts experiencing food insecurity, GBFB is committed to ensuring they have nutritious food all summer long. Summer can be a particularly difficult time for families facing food insecurity as children and teens lose access to the free school meals they receive during the school year.

At this mobile distribution, families often receive 60 to 70 pounds of food, including beans, rice, cabbage, oranges, frozen meats, and a “goodie” for the kids like free books in English and Spanish, which are gifts from the teachers’ union, says Carol Noonan, director of the Nutrition Services Department at Lawrence Public Schools.

“After 12 years, the families we serve have become our family. We know our summer Mobile Markets are important for them,” Noonan explains. “We’ve seen a steady increase in need, year after year, and we’re proud to be able to provide this support—thanks to the generosity of The Greater Boston Food Bank.”
