2018 Chain of Giving

Published on November 9, 2018

Our 13th annual Chain of Giving, held on November 8, 2018, is an event that we look forward to every year. As the 1,200 turkeys were unloaded and passed hand to hand from truck to freezer, it symbolized how each one of us can make a difference in the community. We are only as strong as our network of 500+ hunger-relief agencies, plus thousands of volunteers, donors, advocates and others – people just like you – who help to support the nearly 500,000 people in Eastern Massachusetts who are food insecure.

We were honored to have some of our local government officials attend this event: Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito, Attorney General Maura Healey, State Treasurer Deb Goldberg and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh; as well as Patriots legend Troy Brown and GBFB Board Members.

We are extremely grateful to our food industry donors and partners. Without these companies, we would not be able to deliver turkeys to hungry families during the holidays. Thank you to B and B Trading, Big Y, BJ’s Wholesale, Broccoli Associates, C and S Wholesale, The Goldberg Foundation, Hannaford, Price Rite, Roche Bros, Shaw’s and Star Market, Stop and Shop, Target, Paul Wahlberg, Walmart and Wegman’s.

Each year at this event, we present the Nally Award to a young person who is taking action to end hunger in their community. The Nally Award was established in 2006 and honors Danny and Betsy Nally who were just 8 and 6 years old when they started their turkey drive for GBFB.

This year’s recipient was 13 year-old Max Finn, a nationally-ranked gymnast who created a fundraiser last year called Handstands for Hunger. Supporters of Handstands for Hunger could either make a flat donation or donate a chosen amount per second Max or one of his friends could hold a handstand. Max spread the word to gyms and coaches across New England and raised nearly $10,000 from more than 60 donors.

This holiday season, we hope our Holiday Meal Drive will provide 12 million healthy meals to families across Eastern Massachusetts. These 1,200 turkeys are only the beginning. Considering helping today by making a donation. $20 will feed five a health holiday meal. Donate now >
