On Saturday, members of The Greater Boston Food Bank’s (GBFB) Kitchen Cabinet came together to sort product in our Yawkey Distribution Center.
The Kitchen Cabinet is a group of young professionals who are dedicated to raising awareness and funds to support GBFB and the members of our community who are struggling with food insecurity. Each year, the group holds volunteer days and social events that incorporate creative fundraising and awareness generating elements.
During the sorting day, Kitchen Cabinet co-chairs Matt Goehlert and Jen Reddy kept up the team’s moral as the group sorted over 6,000 pounds of food, which is enough to provide 5,000 healthy meals to those in need. GBFB relies on more than 23,000 volunteers a year, saving GBFB $1 million in labor costs.
“It had been at least a year since I sorted food at the Food Bank.” Matt explained, “It was great to see so many Kitchen Cabinet members take time out of their Saturday to come sort food. Being there with familiar faces made the experience more rewarding because we were there to build relationships and give back to a great organization.”
