The Greater Boston Food Bank Provides 471,865 Meals to Those In Need This Holiday Season

Published on January 7, 2014

The holiday season has come to a close, and here at The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) we’ve just had time to reflect. During this time of giving, GBFB distributed a record 471,865 holiday meals to hungry children, seniors, veterans, college students and working families. In November alone, we distributed 4.5 million pounds of food, which represents a three percent increase over last year. Produce distribution was up 36% over last year. Included in here is our Holiday Meal Drive, an annual online fundraising effort to help ensure that individuals and families in need in Eastern Massachusetts are able to enjoy a traditional holiday feast. This year, GBFB more than doubled our goal of distributing 200,000 nutritious meals, complete with turkey and other poultry, green beans, gravy, stuffing, corn, potatoes and cranberry sauce. With one in nine residents of Eastern Massachusetts struggling to put food on the table, the continued generosity of our donors is more critical than ever. We are very grateful to our corporate and individual donors of food and funds for helping us provide so many nutritious meals this holiday season and all year long. Among this year’s top Holiday Meal Drive donors were Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Prudential Ursula. M. Stephan Realtors, Digital Lumens, Hullabaloo BBQ and Commonwealth Psychology Associates.
