The Massachusetts Emergency Food Assistance Program (MEFAP) provides critical funding to the four Massachusetts food banks— the Merrimack Valley Food Bank, The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, The Greater Boston Food Bank and the Worcester County Food Bank. Together, the food banks serve the 700,000 people struggling with hunger in our state.
MEFAP enables the food banks to purchase a consistent supply of the basics of a healthy diet, such as milk, eggs, peanut butter, fresh fruits and vegetables, to distributed to families in need.
MEFAP also supports local businesses. More than half of MEFAP vendors are Massachusetts-based and over 3 million pounds of fresh produce was purchased from more than 30 Massachusetts farmers.
Last year, MEFAP funds provided nearly 21 million healthy meals through the food banks’ statewide network of more than 800 food pantries, meal programs and shelters.
Working together as the Food Bank Coalition of Massachusetts, the four banks are seeking a total of $20 million in MEFAP funding, an increase of $2 million. $20 million in MEFAP funding will provide almost 25 million healthy meals in 2020.
