The Summer Hunger Gap for School-Aged Children

Published on August 13, 2026

Summer is usually a time to kick back and take it easy. But for households facing food insecurity, the last day of school marks a sudden stop to daily meal programs.

According to a 2025 report by the Food Research & Access Center (FRAC), only about 16% of the 21.1 million children who rely on free or reduced-price school lunches continue receiving meal assistance during the summer. That leaves nearly 18 million kids without the reliable daily nutrition they depend on all year.

Factors Driving Increased Child Food Insecurity

When school meals pause, parents are forced to stretch tight household budgets even further—juggling rent, gas, and medicine just to keep food on the table.

This annual challenge is becoming increasingly difficult due to compounding pressures:

  • Rising food insecurity rates: In Massachusetts, child-level food insecurity climbed to 37% in 2025, up from 33% in 2024.
  • Reductions in SNAP benefits: Recent legislative changes under The One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025 cut SNAP eligibility, leaving over 140,000 Massachusetts residents—including 50,000 children—without critical monthly food assistance.

Supporting the Growing Healthy Futures Campaign

This growing need makes summer fundraising initiatives like Growing Healthy Futures vital for local families facing seasonal meal losses. To bridge this gap, the campaign aims to raise $630,000 through two ways to give:One-time donations to fund immediate food distribution across Eastern Massachusetts.Ongoing monthly support to keep kids nourished throughout the entire summer break.
