The days before Thanksgiving are always the busiest at The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB), but this year we have been busier than ever! Last week alone was a record week – distributing almost 2 million pounds of healthy food! That is almost 200,000 pounds more than the week before Thanksgiving, last year. It was also the biggest week for produce distribution at 678,641 pounds, a 24% increase compared to the same 2014 pre-Thanksgiving week. We’ve been busy delivering loads of greens, carrots, onions, turnips, sweet potatoes and squash – the perfect fixings for nutritious holiday meals for our neighbors in need. https://instagram.com/p/-bhwgyuu32/ And, since we started our turkey distribution in mid-October, we have distributed over 100,000 turkey and turkey alternatives, enough to provide 647,329 holiday meals throughout Eastern Massachusetts. These numbers are outstanding but also speak to the incredible need this holiday season. Team GBFB wants to thank all of our volunteers, donors, partners and member agencies for making this time of year go smoothly. All of our efforts are making the holiday season brighter for many who wouldn’t be able to enjoy the tradition of a holiday meal otherwise. A special thank you goes to all of our Team GBFB warehouse members for keeping the orders and the food moving throughout our warehouse all year long. There is still time to help GBFB this holiday season, please consider participating in this year’s Holiday Meal Drive that will be running through New Year’s.
