Fall is underway and as a chill enters the air, we inevitably start thinking about the holidays quickly approaching. Each year, The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) holds an annual Holiday Meal Drive, which is a fundraising effort that provides holiday meals to those in need. Every $20 donation will provide a full holiday meal complete with turkey and fixings for five.
So many families throughout Eastern Massachusetts struggle to keep up with the rising costs of housing, heat and health bills at this time of year, so the additional stress of the holidays can be difficult. According to the recent Hunger in America 2014 study, food insecurity is growing and hunger is a silent epidemic affecting our neighbors, colleagues, family and friends. GBFB has been working extra hard to accommodate this growing need this holiday season and we are off to a great start.
Currently, our inventory is abundant as we have partnered with farmers, growers, manufacturers, and retailers, just as we have in the past. We will offer items such as fresh potatoes, onions, carrots, turnips, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing mix, and of course, turkeys. We also have other poultry items such as whole chickens to suit the needs of our clients. With as many as over 60,000 turkey requests coming into GBFB this year, we are currently in great shape to fulfill that need. And, we are happy to know that through our partnership with our food vendors and agencies, many throughout out Eastern Massachusetts will be able to enjoy the tradition of a holiday meal that they might not be able to afford otherwise.
There are three ways to participate in this year’s Holiday Meal Drive: Giving individually, starting a fundraiser campaign, or through a corporate challenge. The goal of the 2014 drive is to raise enough funds to provide over 45,000 holiday meals to those in need. The Holiday Meal Drive officially launches on October 15, 2014 and will run through early January. We invite you to participate in this year’s Holiday Meal Drive so to help give the gift and tradition of holiday meals to those who need it most. Together, we can End Hunger Here.
