WAAF’s ‘Rise Up Against Hunger’ Rises Again

Published on December 16, 2013

On December 11-13, WAAF FM’s on-air personalities LB and Spaz rose up on boom lifts, and camped out in the sky for three days for “Rise Up Against Hunger” to benefit The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB). Greg Hill of The Hill-Man Morning Show and Mike Hsu were on air around the clock throughout the event to provide live updates. Each December, the DJs devote three days to various physically challenging activities to raise money for hunger relief efforts. This year’s event raised $73,755 dollars, enough to provide 221,265 meals to those in need, 31,864 more meals than last year. The event began at 7am on Wednesday, December 11, and ended Friday, December 13 at 7pm. The DJs endured treacherous weather conditions; bone-chilling cold and frigid winds, producing sleepless nights on their platforms. Spaz was up in the sky above the Best Western and British Beer Company on Route 9 in Framingham and LB was here at GBFB in Dorchester high above our building. They couldn’t come down until the donations went up! The radio station broadcasted around the clock, raising funds for local food banks. Listeners could “pay to play”, with song requests starting at $50. More obscure songs went for several hundred dollars. Listeners were also encouraged to Text ‘WAAF’ to 20222 to donate $10 or visit GBFB.org/waaf to make an online donation.
