The Greater Boston Food Bank Provides Holiday Meals to a Record 76,609 Families

Published on December 17, 2012

GBFB distributed meals to more than 76,000 families this Thanksgiving, a 37.6 percent increase over last year’s total. The distribution provided holiday meals to many of the one in nine Eastern Massachusetts residents in need of food assistance. In addition to a successful annual online Turkey Drive, increased monetary donations enabled GBFB to honor requests for alternate meal options. GBFB was able reach more families by providing turkey, chicken and other poultry to meet the specific needs of each family. “The generosity of our donors coupled with increased requests for a variety of foods meant that more families could have a special meal at Thanksgiving,” said Catherine D’Amato, GBFB President and CEO. “We thank our donors of food and funds for helping us provide meals to families on Thanksgiving and throughout the year.” Among this year’s top Turkey Drive teams were Millennium Pharmaceuticals, ITA Software by Google, Hullabaloo BBQ, Prudential Stephan Realty and Trinity Building + Construction Management, Inc. In addition, Agar, BJ’s Wholesale, C&S Wholesale, Hannaford, Harvard Biolabs, Honey Baked Ham, King’s Bowl, Roche Bros., Stop & Shop Supermarket Company LLC, Shaw’s and Subway generously donated turkeys to GBFB. Support also came from Turkeys4America.
