GBFB’s Food Donor of the Year

Published on October 31, 2011

Quincy-based Stop & Shop Supermarket Company has been joining with The Greater Boston Food Bank to end hunger in Eastern Massachusetts for over 20 years. Their extraordinary generosity and commitment of support has provided millions of our neighbors with the food they need to feed themselves and their families. The Company’s dedication was honored with this year’s GBFB “Food Donor of the Year” award at our annual Partner Appreciation Luncheon on October 14th. Stop & Shop remains GBFB’s top food donor, providing more than 2.6 million pounds of food to date – enough for more than two million meals. That total includes more than 7,000 turkeys each year for our annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive, a donation level they maintained despite a 20% increase in the price of turkey this year. In addition, Stop & Shop quadrupled the amount it donated through its retail food donation program, providing enough food for an additional 50,000 meals. In addition to food, Stop & Shop provides financial support through its annual Food for Friends program during the holidays, and the company teams up with Feeding America donors such as Unilever to make additional financial donations. Stop & Shop also works to end child hunger by funding Kids Cafe programs in Brockton and Fall River, where employees also volunteer their time by serving meals. Additional employees help The Greater Boston Food Bank by sorting food, or packing bags filled with nutritious items for clients – many of whom are children or seniors – served by our direct service programs. “Stop & Shop’s generosity is helping GBFB end hunger in Eastern Massachusetts,” says Catherine D’Amato, GBFB President and CEO. “Their commitment and support are truly outstanding, and we’re honored and grateful to have them as a Leadership Circle partner.”
