Reflecting on a Successful Hunger Action Month at GBFB

September marked another meaningful Hunger Action Month at The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB), where our community united to raise awareness and take action against hunger. Throughout the month, individuals, organizations, and local leaders came together to support our mission of ending hunger in Eastern Massachusetts.

Highlights from Hunger Action Month 2025

Hunger Action Day – September 9: On this day, landmarks across Eastern Massachusetts lit up in orange, the national color of hunger awareness. Community members wore orange and shared their support on social media using the hashtags #EndHungerHere and #HungerActionMonth. This collective effort amplified our message and highlighted the community’s commitment to ending hunger.

9/11 Day Boston Meal Pack – September 11: Volunteers gathered at The TRACK at New Balance to pack 385,000 healthy meals in honor of the 9/11 Day of Service. These meals were distributed to individuals and families at risk of hunger across our region, demonstrating the power of community service and collaboration.

Testimony for Hunger-Relief Bills – September 16: Kate Adams, Sr. Public Policy Manager, provided oral testimony on An Act Fostering Agricultural Resilience, highlighting GBFB’s partnerships with local farmers that allows us to provide food for 600,000 people every month.

Stop & Shop volunteers working the phone bank at GBFB's annual WCVB Day of Giving Telethon in 2025.WCVB Day of Giving – September 18: The 7th Annual WCVB Channel 5 Day of Giving telethon brought together the community to help end hunger. The event featured powerful stories from our Agency  Partners, donors, and GBFB leaders, highlighting the collective efforts to address food insecurity in Eastern Massachusetts.

Kristina Wong, Food Bank Influencer Show – September 19 – 21: At Kristina Wong’s musical production exploring emergency food systems, GBFB volunteers connected with audience members by sharing information about food insecurity in Massachusetts and the critical role food banks play in addressing hunger.

Mt. Joy Concert at TD Garden, benefiting GBFB and Sharing Excess – September 20: GBFB partnered with Sharing Excess, a national food rescue nonprofit, and the band Mt. Joy to spotlight the fight against food insecurity. Volunteers from GBFB and Sharing Excess raised awareness and support for both organizations through a raffle offering winners the chance to experience part of the concert from backstage.

GBFB Advocacy Trainings – September 22 – 23: GBFB hosted virtual advocacy trainings to empower our network with the tools to make their voices heard through advocacy.

Throughout the month, GBFB provided resources to help individuals and organizations get involved. Our Hunger Action Month toolkit offered social media graphics, proclamation templates, and key messaging to support advocacy efforts. Thank you to Mayor Wu and Governor Healey who both formally acknowledged Hunger Action Month with a proclamation for the City of Boston and Commonwealth of Massachusetts!

The success of Hunger Action Month 2025 is a testament to the dedication and compassion of our community. As we move forward, GBFB remains committed to providing nutritious food to those in need and advocating for policies that support food security. Together, we can continue to make strides toward ending hunger in Eastern Massachusetts.
