GBFB Applauds White House Conference on Hunger, Health and Nutrition

May 5, 2022 – Yesterday, President Biden made a public statement announcing the White House Conference on Hunger, Health, and Nutrition! We join with everyone in the human services community in applauding President Biden’s commitment to a White House Conference on Hunger, Health and Nutrition – an opportunity to bring transformational change to our food system. Thank you also to U.S. Representative Jim McGovern (@Jim McGovern) (D-MA) for his leadership in advocating to bring this gathering to fruition. It has been remarkably, over 50 years since the first White House Conference on these issues and this conference could not come at a more critical time. The lingering impact of COVID, supply chain issues and inflation continue to drive historic need. By convening experts to share insights, experiences and best practices, our community and nation, can develop and enact new initiatives and innovate our policies to efficiently and equitably provide our fellow citizens with sustainable access to fresh, healthy food for future generations.

The Conference will be focused on addressing five main issues: ending hunger, improving nutrition, improving physical activity, reducing diet-related diseases, and closing disparity gaps by 2030. The D.C. portion of the conference will take place in September 2022 (Date TBA). The D.C. event will serve as a culmination to announce a roadmap for the White House and Congress to address the five issues. Prior to the D.C. conference, there will be a series of virtual, regional listening sessions (Dates to be announced in the coming weeks) which will be intended to be available to everyone. The White House is working to put together a submission portal for ideas. Please go to www.whitehouse.gov/hungerhealthconference to sign up for email updates about the conference, including the announcement for the submission portal.

This conference is timed also perfectly with the 2023 Farm Bill discussion, which hearings have already begun. Many of the policies and programs that Farm Bill enacts are programs that will be discussed during the White House Conference.
