Not only do they suffer from poor general health, but food-insecure adults are at greater risk for health con- ditions, such as diabetes, hypertension and depression. Children are at higher risk of impaired physical and cognitive development, behavioral disor- ders and anemia. To address the harmful impacts of hunger on health, GBFB has established partnerships with healthcare centers across Eastern Massachusetts. Seven of our partners are community health centers serving low-income ar- eas, and one serves veterans exclusively. GBFB offers its partners sup- port to treat food insecurity in three ways, with each choosing its level of participation. First, GBFB offers centers the oppor- tunity to set up a free, produce Mobile Market on site; second, we help centers implement food-insecurity screenings of patients; and third, we create a customized toolkit connecting patients with local food pan- tries, state and federal assis- tance programs, and other nutrition resources. Six of our healthcare part- ners operate produce Mobile Markets, reaching more than 5,000 people a month. These include Charles River Commu- nity Health in Brighton (pictured above), Greater Lawrence Family Health Center, the Ed- ward M. Kennedy Community Health Center in Framingham, the Lynn Community Health Center, the SSTAR Family Health Care Center in Fall River and the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford.
