For many, this experience defines the serious prevalence of hunger across Eastern Mas- sachusetts. Yet, our racks of food can be deceiving, making one assume that we mainly Fresh Food, Healthy Food Fresh produce and “center- of-the-plate items” are high priorities at GBFB. In fiscal year 2016, we distributed 16,000,000 pounds of produce and 12,800,000 pounds of cen- ter-of-the-plate items, adding frozen seafood to the options. “It’s the protein – the all- important chicken, pork, beef, fish or even tofu and beans that the meal is built around,” explains Cheryl Schondek, GBFB’s Vice President of Food Acquisition and Supply Chain. “It’s also usually the most expensive item, which many in our community just can’t afford.” Healthy, nutrient-rich items that are typically more expensive are a priority. Those living on tight budgets often forgo such items due to cost, which puts short and long-term health at risk among adults and children. Our inventory is carefully pro- cured, taking different needs into consideration whether they be dietary, cultural or related distribute shelf-stable items. What many do not see are the floor to ceiling racks of fresh food, stored behind the closed doors of our freezer and refrigerators. Over the years, we have expanded the diversity of product we acquire and dis- tribute, considering complete meals as we source food. to access to refrigeration and cooking appliances. Some happily receive fresh green beans each week, while others prefer hassle-free canned vegetables that can be stored longer. No matter the preference, we believe access to nutritious foods is the foundation to good health. We are proud to help build this foundation thanks to the generosity of our partners who make our work possible.
