Hungry Kids Can’t Learn Without Breakfast

Published on May 21, 2019

1 in 9 children in Massachusetts struggle with food insecurity; Rise and Shine Massachusetts is building a movement to change that.

School meals can be a powerful force in reducing childhood hunger. However, when students can’t access these meals, due to barriers like late school buses and stigma, thousands of children miss out on the nutrition they need to fuel a day of learning. Breakfast After The Bell removes barriers, improves health outcomes, and moves the needle on hunger.

Participating in school breakfast will improve students’:

  • academic performance
  • nutrition and health outcomes
  • attendance and behavior

The Greater Boston Food Bank heads up Rise and Shine Massachusetts, a coalition of community, educational, faith-based, and hunger-relief organizations. And together, we advocate for legislation that would increase equitable access to and participation in school breakfast for thousands of low-income children across our Commonwealth.

On June 3, The Joint Committee on Education had a scheduled public hearing on Breakfast After the Bell legislation. There is still time for the Committee to hear from you. Learn how you can voice your opinion >
