The Food Bank is a fun and rewarding place for students to volunteer and give back to the community. We accept groups of elementary and high school volunteers and chaperones up to 30 individuals. For college group volunteer opportunities click here.
A safe and positive experience is a big priority in our program! Therefore, volunteers who participate with school groups must be 16 years of age or older. (Please note that we require a ratio of one adult leader for every six students under the age of 18.) However, due to the growing number of young people under the age of 16 who want to help - we have recently launched a new family-friendly Kids Who Care program - just for them!
Upon arrival, each group will have an orientation to The Greater Boston Food Bank and learn about hunger in eastern Massachusetts. Then the group is trained on how to inspect, sort, and repack the donated food product. Once in the warehouse, groups work on an assembly line together to make food boxes. At the end of your sorting time, we will bring you back to the volunteer room and talk about your experience. We will also tell you how much food your group sorted and how many meals you provided. Then we will take a group photo, and you are on your way again!
To schedule a date to bring your school group to The Greater Boston Food Bank, please fill out the school group application. After we receive the application, you will be contacted to finalize the date and time and sent directions and other information. If you have any questions please contact the Volunteer Department at 617-427-5200 ext. 5096 or volunteer@gbfb.org.
All volunteer groups must make an appointment for their visit.
