Nally Award Ceremony

The 2007 Nally Award was presented to Scott Mason a High School student from Halifax, Mass. who organized a food drive resulting in 3,285 pounds of food donated to The Pine Street Inn.

The Nally Story:  In 1996 eight-year-old Dan Nally and six-year-old Betsy Nally, a brother and sister team from Westwood, Massachusetts, began collecting turkeys from their friends and neighbors to ensure that families in need would be able to enjoy Thanksgiving. Since that initial contribution of 36 turkeys to The Greater Boston Food Bank, their appeal for donated turkeys has grown into an annual event. To date, the Nallys and their organization, Turkeys 4 America have donated approximately 575,000 pounds of turkey to The Food Bank.

The Food Bank established the Nally Award in honor of Dan and Betsy to recognize other outstanding young volunteers in eastern Massachusetts. The Nally Award celebrates young people who are taking action against hunger. In 2007 the award went to Scott Mason, a High School student from Halifax, Mass. who organized a food drive for the Pine Street Inn as an Eagle Scout project. He enlisted the help of his fellow scouts in Troop 39 Halifax, wrote letters to more than 80 local businesses, contacted his local newspaper, and orchestrated the placement of empty bags and flyers on the doors of all the homes in Halifax. When the Scouts picked up the donations a week later, they collected a total of 3,285 pounds of food, an amount well beyond expectations. Dan and Betsy Nally presented Scott with the award at The Food Bank's Partner Appreciation Luncheon in October 2007.
