Community Service Guidelines
Welcome to The Greater Boston Food Bank's Volunteer Program. We understand that you are required to complete a certain number of community service hours. We will do our best to assist you with this requirement, but in order to do so, there are certain regulations you need to follow, listed below. After you have completed all of your hours, we are happy to provide you with a letter (on letterhead) which will confirm your hours of service with us.
Schedule:
Note: To save you a wasted trip, please confirm that we will be open for sorting by calling the day before 617-427-5200 ext. 5096 or by checking with the Reclamation Supervisor when you are here that we will be open the next time you come in.
Morning shift: 8:45am-12:00pm, with a break from 10:30am to 10:45am
Afternoon shift: 12:45pm-4:00pm, with a break from 2:30pm to 2:45pm
Note: the warehouse is closed for lunch from 12:00pm-12:30pm.
You may eat lunch in the Volunteer Room. There is a McDonald's across the street.
Requirements:
- You must be present at the beginning of the shift to get credit for your visit—DO NOT come late—no exceptions.
- ALWAYS sign in upon arrival at the front desk and get a "volunteer" sticker. If you do not sign in, we will have no record of your visit.
- Each shift counts as 3.25 hours. Morning and afternoon shifts combined equal 6.5 hours.
- On your first visit, tell the Reclamation Supervisor how many hours you need to complete; if you need more than eight hours, get a time card from him to log your hours. He will keep the timecard until you have completed your hours.
- Volunteers must wear closed toed shoes and comfortable clothing that can get dirty. We can provide rubber gloves upon request.
- Take nothing from the Salvage Area or Volunteer Room (including food, drink, or non-food items).
- There is no eating or drinking outside of the Volunteer Room.
- There are fire escape routes in the Volunteer Room and Salvage Area.
- For your safety, cell phone use is restricted to the Volunteer Room or the front lobby area ONLY.
**DO NOT leave the Salvage Area during the shift without first talking to the Reclamation Supervisor **
