Second Helping

Second Helping is the perishable food rescue program of The Greater Boston Food Bank. It acts as the vital link between emergency meal programs and food service organizations eager to donate their surplus food to hunger-relief agencies in their communities. Our donors include restaurants, caterers, hotels, corporate cafeterias, and universities. Second Helping provides more than 320,000 meals a year thanks to the generosity of local businesses that partner with us to serve their communities.

2007 Second Helping Donor Of The Year—Pan-Massachusetts Challenge
The relationship between the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge and The Greater Boston Food Bank is a true partnership. The Pan-Mass Challenge raises money for life-saving cancer research and treatment through an annual bike-a-thon that crosses the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. At the start of the event, one of The Greater Boston Food Bank trucks is loaned to the organizers for transporting food. At the conclusion of the bike-a-thon, all excess food is delivered to The Food Bank as a donation in the returned truck. The Challenge's Director of Provisions has worked hard to improve the quality of the food they donate, thus allowing for the least amount of waste possible. Since 2001 The Pan Mass Challenge has donated more than 65,000 pounds of food.
