Re: Italian Sausage Recall

Dietz & Watson, Daniele, and Boar’s Head ready-to-eat (RTE) varieties of Italian sausage, including salami, capocollo, and sopressata are currently being recalled due to concerns of Salmonella contamination. Each package bears a label with establishment number “EST 9992” or “EST 54” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These products were distributed to retail establishments nationwide, as well as internationally.

Re:  USDA Egg Carton Dating

We have received some questions from our member hunger-relief agencies about how to read the code date on USDA eggs packaged by Creighton Brothers of Warsaw, IN.

Egg cartons with the USDA grade shield on them must display the "pack date" (the day that the eggs were washed, graded, and placed in the carton). The number is a three-digit code that represents the consecutive day of the year (sometimes referred to as the "Julian Date") starting with January 1 as 001 and ending with December 31 as 365. For example, if "U075" is stamped on the cases and cartons, this means they were packed on the 75th day of this year, or March 16th. This is not a safety date.

Upon receipt from The Food Bank, agencies should distribute eggs as soon as possible.  For best quality, clients should use eggs within five weeks of receipt from you.

For more information on egg safety please contact the Nutrition Department at (617) 427-5200 or visit www.fsis.usda.gov.
