The Greater Boston Food Bank Distributes Record Number of Turkeys for Thanksgiving
Boston, MA—November 20, 2007—The Greater Boston Food Bank announced today it distributed a total of 38,216 turkeys this holiday season, making this its most successful turkey drive ever and exceeding last year’s total by nearly 3,000 turkeys.
The 38,216 turkeys were distributed to The Greater Food Bank’s network of more than 600 member hunger-relief agencies in 190 communities in eastern Massachusetts. The Food Bank serves 83,000 people weekly all year round.
“With the spike in heating and gas prices and the increase in food costs, many in our community are having difficulty making ends meet; some for the first time in their lives are having to turn to a local food pantry” said Catherine D’Amato, president and CEO of The Greater Boston Food Bank. “It’s especially difficult to be surrounded by plenty and to go home to bare shelves. That’s why the turkey drive is so meaningful to so many who we serve. It is a time we all come together with friends and family to share the bounty. With these donated turkeys, the hungry can participate in this traditional holiday meal.”
This year’s turkey drive kicked off on November 8th and ended today. The public was asked to donate $10 to help purchase a 12-to-14 pound turkey for a family in need.
This year The Food Bank received its largest single donation of turkeys: a total of 7,000 - in its history from Stop & Shop Supermarket Company, Quincy, Mass. Other major donors to this year’s turkey drive included nonprofit Turkeys4America, founded by Westwood, Mass. teenagers Dan and Betsy Nally, which donated approximately 6,700 turkeys. The Turkeys4America donation included 1,500 turkeys from BJ’s Wholesale Club, Natick, Mass., and 1,000 turkeys from Perdue Farms, Inc., Salisbury, Maryland.
“We have very committed and very generous donors, and this year our donors have reached deep and given even more than ever,” D’Amato said. “Both corporate and individual donors have helped us fill the tables and hearts of thousands of families with hope this Thanksgiving.”
