Since 1993, food distribution from our warehouse has increased more than 300%. Today, we are distributing approximately 30 million pounds of food a year. And we're not just providing more food, we're providing more nutritious food. In fact, more than 25% of the food we distribute is perishable, including four million pounds of vitamin-rich fresh fruit and vegetables. This increase in nutritious food is greatly valued by our agencies and the people they serve.
But we must do more. Between 2001 and 2005 the number of people we serve has increased 14%, far in excess of the national average of 8%. Our current facility simply cannot keep up with this growing demand.
This is why The Food Bank is building a new facility at 70 South Bay Avenue, across the street from our current location. To fund the construction of this state-of-the-art energy efficient, environmentally friendly facility, we have launched a $35 million campaign, Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope: The Campaign for a New Food Bank.
