Hunger Action Month – How are you going to help?

September is Hunger Action Month. GBFB and the Feeding America food bank network unites during this time to generate awareness about hunger in America and to mobilize the public to take action against hunger in our communities. There are so many ways to get involved to raise awareness about hunger in our community and we invite you to help GBFB spread the word! GBFB is very lucky to have so many supporters throughout the year and many show their support in inspiring ways. For example, 13 year old Parker dedicated his Bar Mitzvah project to help to end hunger here in Eastern Massachusetts by engaging his community to raise $2,500 for GBFB. After learning about the great work of The Greater Boston Food Bank, Parker took it upon himself to organize a “Free-throws for Food” fundraising event in his neighborhood over the course of a long weekend. For every shot, a donation would be made by his friends and family. Just a week before the event, Parker dislocated his arm, and came to the unfortunate realization that he would not be shooting any free-throws. Parker came up with a creative solution and got his friends to shoot the free-throws in his place. This ended up engaging the entire neighborhood and resulted in even more support than originally expected. Parker’s ability to engage and educate his community about hunger proved to be a success! With every $1 providing 3 meals to those in need, Parker and his friends raised enough to provide 7,500 healthy meals. Parker said, “It makes me sad that a lot of people are hungry, and it was important for me to do something.” One in four children are at risk of hunger—kids just like Parker and his friends. These are the faces of hunger: those that are in need and those that are inspiring others to end hunger here.
