How do I become a Second Helping donor?
Corporate partnerships are vital to the Second Helping program. We welcome all new food service organizations interested and able to participate in working with us.
If you have questions regarding donation guidelines or tax benefits, or to learn more about the program please call 617-427-5200.
Please review our Second Helping Donation Guidelines.
How Second Helping Works
There is a simple, effective routine to Second Helping.
- The Food Bank provides donor kitchens with the disposable aluminum pans, plastic buckets, food-safe bags, and labels they'll need.
- Our refrigerated trucks—on the road Monday through Friday—pick up food from our donors, delivering that food within 24 hours to member agency kitchens. Drivers know which agencies to distribute the donation to, based on its size and type.
- Pick-ups and donations are scheduled by calling The Food Bank's main number:
617-427-5200.
- If a donation cannot be picked up, The Food Bank contacts a member agency close to the donor location for pick up. Quick response helps ensure that no acceptable donation goes to waste.
How am I protected from liability?
The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act protects all donors from liability at national and state levels. Learn more at Tax & Liability Information.
Are there any tax benefits to becoming a Second Helping donor?
Under current tax law, a C corporation that donates an in-kind good such as food to a food bank is eligible to receive a "special rule tax deduction" under Sec. 170(e)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. This deduction allows the company to deduct the cost (or basis) of the donated product and up to half the mark-up of the product's fair market value, not to exceed twice the cost. Learn more at Tax & Liability Infofmation.
Are there any other benefits to becoming a Second Helping donor?
Absolutely! Less wasted food, community goodwill, and positive public perception are all benefits to becoming a Second Helping donor.
