Welcome to the food drive page and thank you for hosting or considering hosting a food drive. Below are answers to questions you may have about hosting a food drive.
Why should I conduct a food drive?
- Help your hungry neighbors. Hunger is a growing problem but it can be solved. The Food Bank received more than 220,000 pounds of food from food drives in 2006. Your efforts will help us meet increased demand for nutritious non-perishable foods.
- Take an active role to end hunger. Everyone has a role in fighting hunger. By working with The Food Bank, the food you donate will be distributed to your community and throughout the nine counties of eastern Massachusetts.
- Join great company. Each year, hundreds of companies, associations, civic groups, and individuals conduct food drives to benefit The Greater Boston Food Bank.
Is running a food drive difficult?
No. With a little planning running a food drive can be easy.
What types of food should I ask people to donate?
There are some rules and recommendations about donating non-perishable food that we ask you to follow. Click here to download a printable list of ideal foods for your food drive.
What happens to the food I donate?
Once the food you collect is donated to The Food Bank, it is checked for compliance with our food safety guidelines and then sorted into about 20 food categories. Then our member hunger-relief agencies, such as pantries and soup kitchens, order the food by category. This allows the agencies to order exactly what they need, whether that be juice, protein products, or canned vegetables.
