Industry Competition

One of the most fruitful techniques for running a food drive is to make it a friendly competition. The feelings of accomplishment and contribution are enhanced by adding a rival into the mix. The Greater Boston Food Bank recently launched industry wide competitions to help raise more food for those in need.

How it works

Industry sectors hold an annual competition to see which firm can raise the most combined food and money to help alleviate hunger. The food and money is reported in pound equivalents and is determined on a per capita basis to ensure small firms can compete against large firms.

Each industry association runs a tailored drive. (For example: “Take Flight Against Hunger” could be a drive for the airline industry; or “Boston Bean Counters” could be a drive for the accounting industry.) The Greater Boston Food Bank provides general marketing materials and templates for the drive as well as collection bins. By engaging the industry association (ex. Air Transport Association or Massachusetts Association of Public Accountants) a wide audience can be reached. The industry association will also help organize and publicize the drive and also fosters the competitive spirit between like minded organizations.

Each company that participates in an industry-specific drive is responsible for promoting and organizing their internal drives based on what they feel will work best for their organization. The Greater Boston Food Bank will provide support to participating firms. In addition to the efforts by the company, The Food Bank will set up virtual food drives so participants can contribute funds directly to their company’s drive. The results are reported to the industry association while the food goes to The Food Bank. Once the industry association and The Food Bank have tallied the results they announce a winner (and possibly 2nd and 3rd place) and, along with Food Bank representatives, provide the appropriate reward and trophy.

The trophies are industry specific and awarded each year to the company who donates the most food per capita. Ideally it will become prestigious to hold the trophy for the year and would foster competition among the companies. In addition this is a “challenge” trophy meaning that if one company wins three years in a row they will be able to keep the trophy permanently and get special recognition for their outstanding and consistent efforts. Both The Food Bank and the industry association will promote the drives and announce the winners.

The collected food is delivered to The Food Bank for distribution to member hunger relief organizations throughout eastern Massachusetts.
