Cans Across America (Sodexho & Curry College)

The Greater Boston Food Bank greatly appreciates all of the hard work and dedication of college students who participated in the Cans Across America canned food drive to help alleviate hunger! The awareness of hunger in eastern Massachusetts has spread through the efforts of students from Curry College and their food service staff representing Sodexho. Through their joint efforts the Greater Boston Food Bank received 50,447 lbs. of high quality food. We extend a huge Thank You to the students at Curry college, Sodexho, and especially Chef Keith Meal for their extraordinary efforts.

Boston-area Temples

September is the month for Yom Kippur. Many Boston-area temples, including: Temple Beth Avodah, Temple Beth El, Temple Isiah Lexington and Temple Israel, participated in alleviating hunger by conducting a huge canned food drive where 16,949 lbs. of food were collected. The temples are very organized in distributing bags to congregants to take home and fill with canned food. They even take it a step further by checking the cans for expiration dates. The Greater Boston Food Bank and member agencies appreciate their thoughtfulness.

N.A.L.C. (National Association of Letter Carriers)

For three years in a row the NALC has held a one day food drive across the nation. The word gets out about the one day canned food drive when Letter Carriers will collect canned food from the door step of people's homes. Canned food is stored at post offices around the country and distributed to local food banks and pantries. This is the largest one day canned food drive event in the nation. The total amount of food donated to the Greater Boston Food Bank last year was 7,266 lbs.

Spirit of Giving

November through December are the months for giving. These are the months when we have our largest canned food drive, called Spirit of Giving. Shaw's supermarkets put together bags with a variety of canned food, such as tuna, green beans, peanut butter, soup, etc. Supermarket patrons purchase these bags that are donated to The Greater Boston Food Bank where the canned food is sorted and distributed to our member agencies. Last year, Spirit of Giving collected 260,000 lbs. of food, representing 200,00 meals for people in need. What a wonderful way to support the community!

Local Food Drives

Last but certainly not least are the hundreds of organizations and individuals who have taken the time to help end hunger. Through their efforts, in 2009 the Greater Boston Food Bank received more than 396,000 lbs. of non-perishable food items representing over 304,000 meals for the hungry! These drives ranged from just a few cans dropped off on the way to work to truly incredible examples of giving totaling thousands of pounds. Come and be a part of the solution to the growing problem of hunger in Eastern Massachusetts.
